It’s Not the School System’s Fault – Learning Starts at Home
We often hear parents say, “The school failed my child.” But the truth is, most learning challenges start long before a child enters the classroom.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: no education system can repair what hasn’t begun at home.
According to the PIRLS report (2021), 81% of South African Grade 4 learners can’t read with comprehension. But what happened before Grade 1?
Too little exposure to language. Too few books. And not enough parent-child interaction.
So what can parents and caregivers do?
-
Be their first teacher. Read, speak, and play with your child every day.
-
Offer rich language constantly. Name things. Describe actions. Use full sentences.
-
Be interested in their development. Don’t wait for problems—build strong habits early.
Children who enter school with weak literacy foundations often never catch up.
Real change begins not with blame, but with ownership. And that starts at home.
