I Struggle to Focus on My Work
You sit down at your desk. Book open. Pen in hand. You’re ready.
And then… nothing.
You read the same sentence three times. Your leg bounces. Your mind drifts. You just can’t lock in.
You’re not lazy. You just haven’t been taught how to train your brain to stay focused—even when you’re not in the mood.
Concentration isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something you train. Like a muscle.
Why is it so hard to focus?
-
You’re not getting enough sleep (yep, it matters!)
-
You’re multitasking—TikTok, WhatsApp, study book.
-
You didn’t “activate” your brain before starting.
-
You have no plan—you’re trying to do everything at once.
Sound familiar?
What actually helps:
1. Move first.
Before you start studying, move your body. Jump rope. Walk fast. Do a few jumping jacks. Movement gets your brain chemistry ready to focus.
2. Work in sprints.
Try the Pomodoro method: 25 minutes of work, 5 minutes rest. After 3 rounds, take a longer break. It gives your brain short-term goals.
3. Create a focused zone.
Study in a space that’s only for schoolwork. Don’t work in bed—your brain associates it with rest.
4. Do one thing at a time.
Really. TikTok will still be there. You’ll finish faster if your brain doesn’t switch between tasks.
Still struggling?
Sometimes the problem isn’t focus—it’s understanding. If your brain can’t make sense of what you’re reading, it drifts. Many teens with reading difficulties say they “lose focus,” but really, they lose comprehension.
✅ The fix?
Get your reading level tested. Stimulus Maksima! offers quick reading assessments that show whether it’s focus—or something deeper.
Your brain can learn to focus. You just have to train it.
